Antibiotic resistance is rapidly on the rise and is set to become one of the largest problems humanity has ever faced. Its predicted that antibiotic resistance will affect 10 million people by 2050 making it the largest cause of loss of life in the modern era. I’m trying to understand how this happens in more detail so we can better arm ourselves against antibiotic resistance by creating new treatments.

Infectious disease remain a problem worldwide. My particular focus is on sexually transmitted infections, known as STIs. STIs are on the rise in the UK – rates of STIs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are all increasing. But the puzzling thing is these are all easily treatable with antibiotics! So why are they increasing now?

In the modern world, we meet people differently – there were no dating apps in the past. My research is significant because we need to understand how people’s changing behaviour changes how STIs spread, and how this affects their control.
