Ebola makes people very very scared because it is so deadly – it can kill up to 90% of the people that catch it. This is because it replicates a lot in your cells, and kills them as it bursts out. The cells it infects are called “endothelial cells” and they make up the lining of your blood vessels. Also your immune system goes completely nuts for Ebola and ends up doing a lot of the damage to you by itself!
In terms of outbreaks, the fear that comes with Ebola makes it very dangerous. It means that people are too scared to go to hospital for something else (like childbirth or malaria) and so when you have Ebola outbreaks, people die of other things that they shouldn’t really be dying of.

As verity said, Ebola is very deadly. Its fatality rate is about 90% so all those who get it rarely survive. It doesn’t infect thousands of people but those who it does infect it usually means they wont survive.
      .
Ebola spreads through bodily fluids like blood. Infected people with lots of cuts and woulds are very high risk.

Ebola is like a really bad flu that destroys you from the inside. Ebola can cause blood loss and organ failure which is why is it so dangerous. Doctors can try to keep you alive by giving you blood transfusions but this only works for so long and the infection moves fast. Usually people infected with Ebola only last for one or two weeks before their bodies shut down.
