Smallpox is an infectious disease. When someone gets smallpox, symptoms include fever, vomiting, and sores. The last naturally occurring case happened in 1977, and it was officially declared eradicated globally in 1980, thanks to the introduction of a vaccine against it. It is an example of a disease that, through human intervention, we have successfully eliminated from the population.
