To be honest, usually when I come across something very unexpected it is because I have made a mistake! There aren’t often big “eureka” moments in my work. However, I am often surprised by how high the rates of infection of some diseases are in different parts of the world. For example, I worked on a project in a region of South Africa where the rate of tuberculosis is extremely high – about 30 times higher than in London.

I’ve helped to advance our understand surrounding bacterial infection. Certain bacteria use tiny biology needles to infect things. They literally stab their host and deliver things like toxins to infect their host. I have found more about how this works. By understanding this, we could now potentially go on to design new control mechanisms like new antibiotics 🏥💊
