An interesting puzzle in STI research is the reemergence of syphilis. Syphilis is a nasty disease that causes untreated causes sores, can cause insanity, and without treatment is fatal. Luckily, it is easily treated by a course of antibiotics. By 2000, practically nobody caught syphilis. However, over the past 18 years, we have seen syphilis rates increase massively. The interesting research question is why is this occurring, especially when treatment is so easy?
