I find the study of infectious diseases interesting because it involves combination of a lot of different factors. For example, the biology of the microorganism, the environment that people live in, the symptoms caused by the infection, and the way that people behave when they have an infection can all affect how a disease spreads and how severe it is.

I study the spread of Ebola virus in West Africa. I really enjoy trying to include things in my analysis that haven’t really been included before! I try and include things like how people feel about public health, how many treatment beds there are, how many people are buried in a safe way. The idea of taking quite fluffy and difficult to quantify things and analysing them mathematically is really fun!

The best part about studying infectious diseases is how complex they are, for such tiny things they are truly fascinating. Also a lot of the work we do helps to contribute to advancing our knowledge of science while improving the quality of life for people around the world. That is a really rewarding aspect to working on infectious diseases for me.
