Working in research, your work doesn’t usually have a direct effect on stopping diseases. My work is more about trying to work out how best to improve healthcare services so that infections are less severe and spread less quickly. However, I used to work for Public Health England, where I was involved in investigation of outbreaks of diseases. For example, in outbreaks of food poisoning, sometimes it is possible to identify and remove the food source that has become contaminated.

Each day a scientist spends in the lab, the closer we collectively get at stopping diseases. Lots of the work I am doing will help contribute to stopping diseases either directly or indirectly.

Fully stopping a disease forever is very difficult. I am making progress in this field but I have not fully stopped a disease yet, this takes thousands of scientists and lots of time….but we are getting there!

Maybe one day the work I am doing now will lead to us beating a disease all together in some way, who knows! 👨‍🔬
