Definitely! I’m what is called a mathematical modeller – which means I make simplified mathematical versions of aspects of the real world, which can be coded up on a computer. By understanding how these work, we begin to understand more about how those things in the real work. I do mathematical modelling for the spread of infectious diseases, but people in my department do mathematical modelling for neuroscience, traffic, evolution, and crowd movements to name just a few!
Yup! Mine is a little less extendable that Trystan’s, but my sort of research involves data from anthropologists, politicians, epidemiologists, medical doctors and many more!
Also, the models that I use have been used to study how populations of animals changed thousands of years ago. As long as we have genetic information, we can use these models!
