Favourite thing to do in my job: I get to do quite a lot of coding, which is fun (usually)
Researcher living in London
I like: tea, sports, the moon, card games, camping, Harry Potter, podcasts.
I don’t like: bananas, zumba, being in a rush.
Infectious disease data scientist
I am an infectious disease epidemiologist – which means that I research how bugs spread in populations. This involves investigating outbreaks of disease and trying to work out how to stop them.
Although I am a research scientist I don’t work in a lab – all my work is done on a computer. I use data and statistics to try to work out things like who is most likely to get an infection and why some people get them more often than others.
At the moment I am working on a project called “Bug Watch”. We’re getting volunteers to fill out surveys telling us when they are ill with an infection and what they do to make themselves feel better. We’re hoping to use the information to work out how best to treat infections.
